Years ago, in my early twenties, I fell hard for Trefethen Family Vineyards’ Chardonnay. For a decadent period of time, it became my white wine of choice, despite the fact that its purchase strained my small-peanuts budget. But soon enough I moved onto other brands, and it wasn’t until this past week that I uncorked another bottle (the 2010 vintage) of this lauded Napa Valley winery’s Chardonnay.
Delightful and complex, and eminently drinkable, this beautifully balanced white reminded me of why I was so captivated with Trefethen’s Chardonnays Way Back When. Showcasing elegant, rich apple-pear flavors with a bright hint of lemon and ripe cantaloupe, and a subtle, warm kiss of oak and vanilla that lingers on the palate, this tasty white wine would be fabulous with an array of food partners – try it with shellfish pasta, a vegetable frittata, roasted chicken or turkey, Caesar salad and crab cakes.
