Five Memorable Dishes

Posted on August 20

I have been lucky to enjoy a raft of terrific meals these past few weeks. Of all the dishes I happily devoured, these five were perhaps the most memorable:

La Bruschetta Estiva con Ricotta e Pomodorini

Biba Restaurant

Biba’s lively grilled summer bruschetta, smeared with ricotta cheese and topped with a tumble of intensely sweet, juicy cherry tomatoes punctuated with slivers of fresh, zippy basil, was a glorious, tasty celebration of Sacramento summer.

Chipotle Corn Chowder

Newcastle Produce

Another summery treasure, Newcastle Produce’s rustic, lick-your-bowl-clean chipotle corn chowder – bursting with texture and flavor – had a lingering, spicy afterburn on the palate that added a fun dimension to the dish. I finished the meal off with an enormous, freshly-baked peanut butter cookie.

Mexico City Tacos

Ernesto’s Mexican Food

I am a big fan of Ernesto’s Mexico City tacos. The kitchen piles the meat of your choice (I like a combination of carnitas, chicken and carne asada) atop very fresh mini corn tortillas, then sprinkles them with chopped white onion and cilantro. The tacos (three to an order) are served with fragrant, tender whole brown beans and a complex, smoky housemade salsa. Offering clean, bold and straightforward flavors, the dish is utterly satisfying.

OneSpeed Burger

OneSpeed

I hungrily plowed my way through Rick Mahan’s super-decadent, ridiculously juicy and delightfully messy burger one recent Friday night. Topped with melted cheddar cheese and loaded with slices of ripe red tomato, sautéed onions and bell peppers, the burger was embellished with a zingy rosemary aioli and nestled next to a generous pile of delectable skinny fries.

Russian Tea Cake

Tower Café

This crumbly, pecan-studded mouthful of heaven is one of my favorite cookies in town. The plump shortbread is covered in powdered sugar and practically melts in your mouth when you take a bite. Pair this sweet treat with a hot cup of tea or a big glass of milk.
