Check It Out: Midtown’s Ficklin-Wilcox

Posted on August 19

I spent a delightful afternoon recently at midtown’s Ficklin-Wilcox, a friendly store and tasting room featuring Ficklin Vineyards' marvelous Ports and table wines. Ficklin Vineyards, located in Madera, was established in 1946 and is the country’s oldest Port winery. For $6, visitors can taste a sweet lineup of items while learning how each individual product was crafted and how best to serve it. Standouts we savored ranged from a 10-year-old tawny Port to a lighter, livelier raspberry-kissed rosé Port, perfect for a pre-dinner aperitif. The store also offers a wonderful selection of kitchen ware and cookbooks, as well as a number of in-store food and wine pairing demonstrations, classes and blending seminars. This is a great place for a quirky, fun first date, or to bring foodie friends and out-of-town guests.
