Try It: Midtown's Thai Basil

Posted on February 11

We Sacramentans have a raft of good Thai restaurants within our reach – and one of the cheeriest is midtown’s bustling Thai Basil, which also boasts a hip, stylish lounge called Level Up (open only in the evenings) located on the second floor of its distinctive J Street building. I had a fabulous lunch recently at Thai Basil, which included sparklingly fresh salad rolls (po-pia-sod), crammed full of pink shrimp, tofu, crunchy cucumber and noodles, dunked in a thick, peanutty sauce; and the kitchen’s popular, fragrant yellow curry (gang-garee-gai), featuring chunks of chicken with soft potatoes, onions and carrots. Thai Basil also offers excellent soups – I have visited more than once while under the weather to tuck into a bowl of the restaurant’s restorative and vivacious Thai hot and sour soup (tom yum).
