If you want to immerse yourself in the world of backyard chicken production, the Davis community is hosting an event that is sure to delight you. The 5th annual Tour de Cluck is an event that spans the entire month of May, with its signature event—the Coop Crawl—occurring on Saturday, May 24. The Coop Crawl is a bike tour that visits a number of local chicken coops, and tickets sell out fast. On that day, the Davis farmers market will offer a Fowl Food Fair; and a crawl kickoff celebration will be held at the United States Bicycle Hall of Fame on Third Street.
But Tour de Cluck festivities have already begun in the community—local restaurateurs have joined in the Fowl Food Frolic, where each establishment features a signature Tour de Cluck dish. Participating restaurants include The Davis Graduate, Osteria Fasulo, and Tucos, and a portion of the proceeds from those dishes is donated back to the event. There is also a rich educational component: “Chicken Skool” features a series of wide-ranging, poultry-centric talks and activities for both adults and children. These include “Around the World with Chickens” at the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library; “A Farm to School Stroll in the Country,” hosted by Davis’ Farm 2.6; and “Be Your Backyard Bird’s Wingman, in Health and Disease,” presented by UC Davis Veterinary Medicine faculty.
