Whirling Dervishes: Prayer Dance Performance

Posted on December 10

Now for something completely different: the Sema Ceremony of the Whirling Dervishes. In flowing white garments and traditional felt hats, the dervishes turn in unison, a religious practice that attunes them to the music of their hearts, and mesmerizes audiences. Their prayer dance honors Rumi, the great 13th century Sufi poet. Music played by Turkish musicians will round out the evening, which is presented by the Mevlevi Order of America. It all plays out Saturday, Dec. 12 at 8 p.m. at the Masonic Temple on J Street. Tickets are $20 to $35. Purchase them at Brown Paper Tickets.
