The charming town of Sutter Creek comes alive with the sound of music—ragtime music—this Friday–Sunday, Aug. 10–12, during the 14th Annual Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival. More than two dozen musicians will perform at five venues in the downtown area: Sutter Creek Ice Cream Emporium (51 Main St.), The American Exchange Hotel (53 Main St.), Sutter Creek Theatre (44 Main St.), Ragtime Garden (an outdoor venue on the deck of the BellaGrace vineyards wine tasting room—73 Main St.) and The Foxes Inn bed and breakfast (77 Main St.).
The fun starts Friday at 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. and lasts until 11 p.m. or midnight on Friday and Saturday, and about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. But ragtime-loving night owls will want to attend the “afterglow party” on Saturday night, an after-hours jam party at a place called Skunk Hollow, which is actually the home of Sutter Creek resident and Ragtime enthusiast Chip Lusby. (Lusby is also hosting a pre-festival gathering—also open to the public—starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9 at, you guessed it, Skunk Hollow.) Other fun happenings include silent movies accompanied to music by Ragtime performers at the Sutter Creek Theatre, a youth concert (dubbed the Future of Ragtime) on Saturday and a gala that evening. You’ll get more info on the above and other weekend happenings—including the address of Skunk Hollow—when you arrive at the festival and pick up your program booklet. Questions? Tickets are $15 to $70. One important thing to know about buying tickets: It’s cash or check only. None of that fancy plastic. You can find out more about the Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival by logging on to suttercreekragtime.com.
