Pups in the Park

Posted on June 19

Get your dog ready to strut his stuff. The 5thAnnual Pups in the Park Dog Walk and Costume Contest takes place this Saturday, June 22 in McKinley Park. The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon and starts with a 1K walk. After the walk . . . or, “parade of pups” as I like to refer to it . . . the festival begins. Dog trainer Uncle Matty will be on hand doing training demos, and retired Sacramento Police Department K-9 Bodie will make a special appearance. Also on hand: Councilmember Steve Cohn, who will be providing a few words prior to the walk, and KCRA 3 evening anchor Kellie DeMarco, who will be master of ceremonies. Don’t forget to enter your dog into the costume contest. The categories: Most Creative Costume, 2) Best Impersonator of Character/Celebrity, and 3) Most Creative Team of Dogs Representing a Theme. Somebody on the organizing committee of this event thought yours truly would make a good judge, so I’ll be out there. (No bribes, please.) It costs $20 to participate in the walk and costume contest, but the festival itself—featuring local vendors and on-site dog adoptions—is free. You can register at the event for the walk and costume contest, but re-registering is encouraged and the first 200 people to do so will be rewarded with a swag bag full of goodies. Proceeds benefit the Department of Parks and Recreation, Friends of East Sacramento, Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary and the Youth Development Network.
