Honor the equinox with fire! You can do it Saturday, Sept. 21—the eve of the autumnal equinox—when local fire dance troupe Obsidian Butterfly hosts its Sixth Annual Fire Spectacular. The event celebrates flame as a powerful artistic element, showcasing dancers, hoopers, fire breathers and fire eaters. The first time I attended an Obsidian Butterfly show, prompted by my friend Dell, who is a member of the troupe, I gained respect for the performers, who are brave (or crazy) enough to risk getting burned, even in front of an audience. And you’ll see more of these brave people in the show than you’d expect. In all, nine fire groups from California to Alaska will take the stage, creating high drama as the days and nights reach equal length. Buy tickets here.
