The Art of Tea

Posted on November 21

Though most of us don’t know our pu-erh from our houkui here in the United States, in many other parts of the world tea is not just a dietary staple but also an art, a science and a spiritual experience. To put it bluntly, a Bigelow tea bag in a mug is basically the fast food counterpart to the traditional preparation and ceremony surrounding the consumption of tea by connoisseurs. Because so many people yearn to know more about the healthy, detoxifying and invigorating drink, UC Davis’ Robert Mondavi Institute for Food and Wine Science is putting on a two-day tea event to educate and delight us tea plebes. Thursday, Nov. 21, teamaster Wingchi Ip is holding a two-hour tea brewing and tasting demonstration, followed by a reception. Nov. 22, a tea master and tea scholar are teaming up to give a talk about their studies. All of these events promise to be enlightening, engaging and very tasty. Come out and have a sip.
