Looking for a little escape this month? Take a quick jaunt to Grass Valley for Music in the Mountains’ 33rd SummerFest season, playing June 11 through July 3. The festival will feature an array of musical acts—from Celtic classics to film soundtracks and more—in three concert series at multiple venues.
The Concerts Under the Stars series takes place on the Great Lawn at the Nevada County Fairgrounds and features musical acts “Grand Fiddler’s Rally” on Saturday, June 21 at 8 p.m. (fiddle music from Scotland); “The Fab Four: The Ultimate Tribute” on Friday, June 27 at 8 p.m. (“The best Beatles show in the world,” according to the LA Times); and “A John Williams Spectacular” on Saturday, June 28 at 8 p.m. (music from iconic Williams soundtracks—“Jaws,” “E.T.,” “Star Wars,” “Harry Potter” and more).
The Orchestra Series takes place at the Amaral Center at the Nevada County Fairgrounds and includes the “Family Music Faire” on Saturday, June 21 at 11:30 a.m. (an interactive family concert featuring Lemony Snicket); “Young Geniuses” on Sunday, June 22 at 3 p.m. (groundbreaking pieces by youth composers); “Tales from the Exotic East” on Wednesday, June 25 at 7:30 p.m. (featuring Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade” and others); and “Nordic Fantasy” on Sunday, June 29 at 3 p.m. (Scandinavian folklore set to music).
The Chamber Works series will play at select venues and features 27 world premieres by local youth musicians in the “Young Composers Project” on Wednesday, June 11 and Friday, June 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church (828 W. Main St.); Cuban jazz and string and woodwind quartets in “Feste del Caribe” on Thursday, June 19 at 7 p.m. at the Center for the Arts (314 W. Main St.); and pianist-in-residence Konstantin Soukhovetski performing “The French Connection” on Thursday, June 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Amaral Center (11228 McCourtney Road).
