A few years ago, I worked as an assistant for an Our Wedding fashion spread at Grand Island Mansion. Among the willow trees, majestic fountains and lush gardens melting into the banks of the Sacramento Delta, the Alice in Wonderland-themed shoot, with its glittery butterflies, overgrown cartoon rabbits, and a life-size bird cage was a magical fairy tale come to life. Our shoot merely captured what brides had known for years—the mansion is the perfect place to begin an enchanted “happily ever after.”
Deep within the opulent casings of the mansion, it’s easy to forget the close proximity to the modern skyline of downtown Sacramento. Built in 1917 for San Francisco businessman Lewis Meyers and his wife Audrey, the elegant Italian Renaissance estate was a place for Lewis to nurture his fruit orchards. Over the years it played host to actors, presidents and authors, though, today it mainly functions as a wedding and private event venue.
Ready for your fantasy wedding? Check out the Grand Island Mansion Open House, taking place Saturday, Nov. 2, from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Guides will lead tours of the facility including the dining rooms, the frescoed ballroom and the heavily paneled bar and billiards room. Later, stroll the grounds nibbling a sweet treat or tasty hors d'oeuvres from onsite vendors, as you lose yourself in the columns and palms. Prince Charming will see you at the altar!
