A group of local teens is getting into the farm-to-fork spirit at Luther Burbank High School. With the help of a local non-profit called Fresh Producers, the teens are now operating a student-run farm stand on their campus. Every Thursday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. the students feature seasonal, organic and affordable fresh produce grown on small local farms such as Soil Born Farms (Sacramento), Toledo Farms (Acampo), Mt. Moriah Farms (Davis) and Whaley Heirloom Veggies (Pleasant Grove). Fresh spring greens, grown by the Burbank Urban Garden club on campus, are also available.
The farm stand will run through the end of May, and it’s staffed by Luther Burbank students from all four grades, teachers and local community members. The goal of the project is to make fresh fruits and vegetables more accessible to students, staff and community members, while providing job training and business skills to the students running the stand.
The stand is located at 3500 Florin Road, Sacramento, in the main parking lot. For more information, contact Christie Moulton, firstname.lastname@example.org; (916) 383-7374.
